Hurricane season is in full swing as a tropical storm churns via the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico sits in its path.
The storm is ready to make landfall on Wednesday. However, President Donald Trump has already used the looming storm as an opportunity to rekindle his political issues with the island.
Congress approved 92 Billion Dollars for Puerto Rico last year; a record of its variety for ‘anywhere,’ ” Trump posted on social media Tuesday.
Trump is speaking about money allocated to Puerto Rico within the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, which devastated the island in 2017. He is also mistaken on the amount of money Congress approved.
So far, roughly $42 billion in federal disaster relief funding has been allocated to Puerto Rico. However, only about $12 billion has been spent. Trump has repeated this declare before: Back at a rally in May, he mentioned Puerto Rico received $91 million. It is unclear where that extra $1 million came from in Tuesday’s tally. Amid reporting of Trump’s curiosity in buying Greenland, Trump even joked in a meeting about trading Puerto Rico for Greenland, according to The News Channel.
